The Sweaties
Scarlet is living proof that you can’t judge a book by its cover. A lot of people might have automatically labelled a girl as somebody who shouldn’t be at the football, but we knew her better than that. I could see why she raised some eyebrows though, because there were matches where even the biggest, burliest bearded blokes were unable to take the heat. One of these was the England-Scotland game that took place at Hampden Park towards the end of the 80s.
As I’ve said before, we had no interest whatsoever in fighting for our nation because we always put club above country. Mobs like Chelsea, West Ham and Bolton loved to band together to take on foreign teams, but the only reason any of our lads went to internationals was to have it with other English mobs. We knew the ICF would be there because the Cockneys are proper into the England scene, so we made up our minds that we were going to hunt them down and do them.
One of our frontline fighters at the time was a lad called ‘J’. He grew up in one of the city’s roughest estates and soon became a top United face. He has a better recollection of the game than I have because I was a little the worse for wear that day. This is what went down during the epic battle of the nations:
